How are we preparing young people for the 21century?

Emotional intelligence  creativity and empathy skills are far more important than technical skills in our modern world.

Our young people are living in uncertain times. No matter where they live or the culture they come from, there are fundamental questions and fears about the safety of our species on this planet.  If we are to manage this skillful and wisely, we must learn how to be with our emotions without overwhelm.

Knowing how to listen to the body’s wisdom, and how to  read, manage and use emotions are fundamental and universal skills. These skills support life-long learning and  enable us to feel deeply and think clearly no matter what the situation. Increasingly these are the skills that will differentiate our children in the world of work.

I found the concept of the 3 dragons really useful as a simple, visual.and intuitive way to discuss emotions with my 2 young children, who are 6 and 9 years old. My son (who is 6) in particular related to the concept straight away, and it has really helped him to calm down much more quickly when he does have a ‘tantrum’ and feels intense frustration or sadness that he finds it difficult to express fully in words.
